ARCHERY

The Archery Department of the Squamish Valley Rod & Gun Club is dedicated to the promotion of archery in all of its various forms.

Our Archery Instructors' and Volunteers’ primary goals are to educate & promote the sport of Archery while encouraging individuals to enjoy the sport, with safety as our main concern.

We have an 18 meter indoor shooting range which is open to Adults (18+) on Wednesday nights  and Friday nights for Family Archery night.

Our fees have been restructured and are now:

Adults (18+) - $5 drop-in fee

Junior (17 & under) - $2.00 drop-in fee

We also have a newly developed outdoor range dedicated to archery, it is operational and open year round to club members and their guests from 9AM-9PM (or dusk whichever comes first). The Range is 70 metres in length with a 50m MAX target distance. We have a shooting shed and a warming hut now built. There will be more improvements in the near future with the installation of an electrical service for range status lights and general lights and outlets. In the meantime, please use the flags provided to control the range.

About Archery

Archery is an extremely old sport, one that dates back to prehistoric times. There are many different divisions of archery in which people compete; these include traditional, recurve, compound and crossbow.

Traditional or long bows, are usually made from yew wood but some are made of mixtures of wood.

Re-curve bows are ones which look most like a traditional bow, except that the tips of the bow curve forward, hence the name re-curve. They are made of several materials including laminated wood and fiberglass. Stabilizers and sights are also allowed. They are the exclusive bow of the Olympics.

Compound bows are bows that also have pulleys. This allows for a lot of energy to be stored by the bow while allowing the archer to only exert a minimum of force while at full draw.

Crossbows are held horizontally and the string is held by a trigger release.
